Scaling + Root Planing For a Cleaner Mouth!

 In News

You should regularly visit your dentist every six months for a cleaning and checkup. If during one visit, your dentist tells you that you have gum disease, do not panic! Fortunately there are two common procedures used to help reverse the disease – dental scaling and root planing.

Dental scaling is done with manual hand instruments, ultrasonic instruments or both! The periodontist will throughly examine your mouth and than use these tools to remove the plaque and bacteria from the tooth surface and underneath the gum line.

With root planing, a more detailed process of scaling to the root surface is performed. This also helps to decrease inflammation of the gum tissue. The root surface is scaled and rough target areas are eliminated of plaque and smoothed out.

Dental scaling and root planing can take a few visits be successful depending on the level of disease in the mouth. Remember your periodontist can further educate you on how to care for your teeth and gum tissue. Contact us at Niagara Periodontics for more information!
