Periodontal Disease – The Breakdown!

 In News

Periodontal disease is also known as gum disease – one of the most common dental problems people face. The disease happens over time and can develop slowly without pain. Unfortunately you may not notice the signs of gum disease until it is too late! The good news is that gum disease can be prevented, it can be treated or can even be reversed in the beginning stages. Gum disease originally starts with the build up of plaque. If the plaque is not removed from daily oral care (brushing and flossing) it will harden into tartar. This cannot be removed by simply brushing your teeth and can become infected. This early stage of gum disease is known as “gingivitis”. You could notice bleeding and red gums while you brush your teeth in this stage. As this progresses, little pockets of the infection form which are almost invisible to the eye. The disease can continue to develop and break down the tissue of the gums. Next, the bone which holds your teeth in place can begin to break down and your teeth can become loose and potentially fall out! Make sure to brush and floss every day to prevent gum disease!
